So Barn Cute
So Barn Cute
Originally built in 1911 as the horse stable for a larger estate, this Newport Beach cottage slowly evolved into a charming urban farmhouse as successive owners added to it over the decades.
Our challenge was to give the current owners the modern kitchen and master suite they needed while preserving the character that had defined the home for more than a century. Careful planning and thoughtful detailing allowed the new spaces to feel both fresh and seamless, honoring the home’s layered history while preparing it for the future.

“When we bought a small farmhouse in Newport Beach, we fell in love with its charm and character, but we knew we needed to make some changes. We had to find the right architect to add space and modernize the home.….Anders Lasater Architects were the perfect choice. Anders’ and Christine’s enthusiasm and genuine interest in our little project during our first meeting were deeply reassuring. It was truly a pleasure working with them both, and the final outcome exceeded every expectation.”

Leaving the front elevation untouched, our solution proposed a sideways extension of the kitchen that creates more interior space and defines a protected inner courtyard for al-fresco entertaining.
The new master bedroom connects the main house to the previously detached back yard barn to enclose the courtyard and enjoys views to the new gardens to either side of the master suite.
Essential, reductive, and true to its original forms and scale, this little horse stable turned farmhouse is now the Goldilocks of the neighborhood, and just right for the happy homeowners.
