Tia Juana Weekend
Tia Juana Weekend
Along Tia Juana Avenue in the hills above Laguna Beach, a row of mid-century beach cottages still tells the story of the 1960s and ’70s, when they were first built as simple weekend getaways - never meant to last more than a few decades.
At just 1,800 square feet, this house had long outlived those expectations. Weathered and tired, it sat on a prime corner lot with sweeping views and with homeowners who believed in its potential.
The project breathed new life into the home, extending its future while giving it the thoughtful transformation it had long deserved. A fresh face, reimagined spaces, and a renewed connection to its setting ensure that this little house is ready for the next 30 years.
With enthusiastic support from the owners we completely transformed the home, inside and out, with a new plan for the upper floor kitchen, living, and master bedroom areas as well as a new entry, office and guest room layout downstairs.
A new wardrobe of smooth white and gray plaster accented with Brazilian iron wood siding sets a dramatic backdrop for the water-wise and sculptural cactus landscape.
The dark and stuffy stairs that were located in the middle of the house were moved to the outside wall and celebrated with a two-story glass wall that shines like a lantern in the evening.
Above the kitchen island a new ridge skylight invites the sun deep into the home bringing light to the deepest corners of the space.
Refreshed and renewed the house looks to the future, and several more decades of sun, ocean views, and good memories to be made.
