PROJECT
A Farmhouse by the Sea
Pinecrest Residence
It’s hard to imagine now, but this light filled, contemporary California farm house was once a tired and worn 1950s rancher lacking any of the style that made the 1950s cool and hip. Instead, it was dark and dreary, and had no space for a growing family to make a home. So, working closely with the owners, we set out to create a luminous collection of thoughtfully organized volumes that form a backdrop for their daily family life, while embracing the sunlight and view beyond. The results speak for themselves, and the owners couldn’t be more pleased. We are too!
This home was featured on the cover of Design OC Fall/Winter 2017
Working closely with the owners we set out to create a luminous collection of thoughtfully organized volumes that form a backdrop for their daily family life, while embracing the sunlight and view beyond.
Intimate moments are found within and without the house where a smaller, more personal scale is celebrated. The sitting area in the great room, and the steps of the entry courtyard are just a few of these special moments that bring detail and texture within reach of the family.
Giving the house some height is always a challenge in Laguna, but we were able to work within the code restrictions and make it feel like a new home, while protecting neighbors views.
A view through the home to the setting sun and the glow of the fire pit makes this protected courtyard a perfect retreat from which to enjoy the coming sunset.
The setting sun is a welcome dinner companion as evening falls across the great room, filling the home with the amber glow of twilight. Open, luminous, and organized for easy living, the home embraces family and guest alike, offering a variety of spatial moments and that make for a rich living experience.
